Het jaar is net van start en er kan in een week veel gebeuren. Maar nog niet veel goeds als ik het zelf moet zeggen. Daar brengen deze video’s zeker verandering in, want dit zijn de eerste nieuwe bouwstenen voor een jaar dat voorspoedig gaat eindigen over 357 dagen.
Landmvrks
We beginnen met het Franse Landmvrks dat zich langzamerhand stevig in de metalcorebasis heeft geplant en is gaan groeien. Het album Fantasy is het laatste wapenfeit van de band en het nieuwe album Lost In A Wave is aangekondigd en zal op 26 februari door Arising Empire worden uitgebracht. De nieuwe single Paralyzed is nu met video verschenen. Een single dat rustig begint, maar langzaam in kracht toeneemt. Door Corona kon het Storm The Arena niet doorgaan en de band besloot om de Accor Arena te gebruiken als decor voor de video.

Annisokay
We blijven met Annisokay bij Arising Empire. Van het nieuwe album Aurora zijn al reeds vijf video’s verschenen en vandaag is nummer zes aan de beurt. Het is The Cocaines Got Your Tongues. Het laat een band zien die met nieuwe zanger Rudi Schwarzer zichzelf uitgevonden lijkt te hebben sinds de opriching in 2007.
To Kill Achilles
Van Duitsland naar Schotland om de video van To Kill Achilles te bekijken. Luna Et Altum komt van het album Something To Remember Me By dat begin februari het licht zal zien. Over het nieuwe album zegt de band:
“This record is the story of a man who wakes up on his twenty fifth birthday and the events that happen throughout the course of a year that lead him to take his own life exactly one year on to the date. Each song represents a month in his life (with the exception of two moments of reflection). In each of the songs we tell a story that a member of the band had to go through over the last few years. Every song is real and is a portrayal of how we felt in that moment.
The message of the record is to highlight that these events can happen, that people can be dealing with things without anyone else being aware. In our lives, we were lucky because we have the support network of our incredible friends and families, but in the case of our character, he does not. The record is a statement which shows that without support, even the strongest of people can be driven to contemplate taking their own lives.
It’s so important to talk, it’s so important to find the people in life that you can share your lowest moments with because no one can be expected to go through that alone. Our character deals with alcoholism, a lack of direction or passion in life, the fear of growing older and losing yourself, the isolation felt by following a creative career, the idea that when you die no one will remember you, the onset of anxiety and the shame you feel about trying to tell people you’re not ok.
The pressure you put on a partner when you’re not in the right headspace, the fear of showing your emotions as a male incase you’re seen as weak, the fear of death, the moment that suicide enters your mind as an escape and the loss of a parent. A lot of these things will happen in our lifetime and it’s important to know that if they do, there’s people out there who will help you through it.
Something To Remember Me By is our characters suicide note, explaining why he felt he must walk that path, in a way it’s all of ours too as we all went through these things, we just had the people there to stop it from being our eventuality. The message we try to promote is that these things are normal, these feelings are normal and if you recognise any behaviour we speak of in anyone close to you, then it’s your responsibility to be the first to speak up. A conversation can save a life, don’t let anyone end up the way our character does. In a way this record is also the solution to the problems that we speak about, we poured our emotions into this, and after we’re gone, it’ll still be there, reminding people that we once existed and that we once felt as strongly as we do. It’s just something to leave behind, a memento, a token, or just something to remember me by.”

Met het nieuwe album Immortal viert Michael Schenker zijn 50-jarig jubileum. De kwajongen van toen is nog altijd springlevend en jong van geest wat blijkt uit de nieuwe video bij Sail The Darkness.

Fireforce
Het Belgische Fireforce heeft onderdak bij ROAR ! Rock Of Angels Records en komen volgende week met het nieuwe album Rage Of War. Van dit album is March Or Die nu naar voren geschoven. Houd je vast.
“When you entered the French foreign legion, you had to march or die… When you spilled your blood for France, you could become a French citizen… This tells the story about the brave fight of 65 “légionnaires” against 3000 Mexicans during the Battle Of Camaron in 1863. Only three men survived and were allowed to return home, carrying the body of their Captain Jean Danjou with them. The wooden hand of commander Jean Danjou is kept as a relic in the foreign legion.”
Sivert Hoyem
Vandaag komt ‘Devotional’ uit, de nieuwe single van Sivert Høyem. Het is na ‘Run Away’ de tweede single van de EP ‘Roses of Neurosis’ die uitkomt op 12 februari 2021. Op ‘Devotional’ wordt Høyem’s meesterlijke songwriting versterkt door de muzikale bijdrage van de bekende Noorse jazz trompettist Nils Petter Molvær, die het droomlandschap van de single inkleurt met zijn kenmerkende geluid.
‘Devotional’ kwam tot stand in Sivert’s studio in Oslo met zijn vaste muzikale partner Christer Knutsen. Høyem zong en speelde gitaar, terwijl Knutsen het geluid deed en alle andere instrumenten bespeelde. Toen het nummer vorm begon te krijgen, bleek er plek te zijn voor een echte solo. Eigenlijk overwogen de muzikanten om een virtuoze harmonica-solo toe te voegen. Maar op de één of andere manier kwam de naam van Nils Petter Molvær bovendrijven, een pionier en grootmeester in de hedendaagse fusie van jazz en elektronische muziek.
Sivert licht toe: “Ik ontmoette Nils Petter voor het eerst bij een Madrugada concert in Amsterdam 20 jaar geleden. Het bleek dat we een aantal dezelfde muzikale referenties en interesses hadden, vooral op het gebied van pop en rock. Ik wilde al heel lang een keer met hem samenwerken. Het aparte geluid dat hij toevoegt aan ‘Devotional’ en aan één van de andere nummers, maakt dat ze een speciale plaats innemen op de nieuwe EP.”
“Ik heb de indruk dat Nils Petter niet veel van dit soort gastbijdrages doet buiten zijn eigen genre. Hij is een van de meest stijlbepalende artiesten in de moderne Noorse jazz, en ook een grote naam in de rest van de wereld. Het is dus een echte eer om dit samen met hem gedaan te hebben”, zegt Høyem.
