Het was vorige week groot nieuws: de eerste Europese show van Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band in zeven jaar tijd. De kick-off van zijn wereldtournee begon eerder dit jaar al in de V.S. met de eerste show op 1 februari in Tampa. Maar afgelopen vrijdag 28 april was Europa dan toch eindelijk echt aan de beurt. Barcelona mocht als eerste Europese stad Springsteen ontvangen voor twee concerten (de tweede op zondag 30 april). Dat gebeurde in typisch Spaanse (lees: temperamentvolle) stijl: in heel de stad was de Springsteen-koorts al dagenlang volop voelbaar, met als apotheose de twee magische concerten van ieder drie uur voor liefst 117.000 uitzinnige bezoekers.
De unanieme conclusie van critici en fans luidde dan ook dat de 73-jarige muzikale alleskunner nog immer op eenzame hoogte staat. Spaanse media buitelden over elkaar heen om hun lof en bewondering te uiten:

“The greatest show on earth.” – Efe Eme

“Springsteen imposes his tenacity on a happy Olympic Stadium.” – El Pais
Ook de Britse krant The Times gaf middels een vijfsterrenrecensie zijn maximale score: “He only eats one meal a day. He runs everywhere. He challenges the rest of the E Street Band to Graeco Roman wrestling matches. There are many rumours as to how Bruce Springsteen stays concert-fit at 73, but whatever he does, it is working.“
Het eveneens Britse The Telegraph verwoordde de muzikale betovering als volgt: “If you haven’t had the pleasure of seeing the greatest rock star of our times with the greatest rock and roll band in the world, I would urge you to catch this tour.”
De voelbare magie tijdens de twee concerten – mede dankzij een even fenomenale als verrassende setlist met klassiekers als ‘Dancing In The Dark’, ‘Badlands’ en ‘Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out’; energieke covers; en de uitvoering van ‘Glory Days’ met Patti Scialfa plus speciale gasten actrice Kate Capshaw en voormalig first lady van de V.S. Michelle Obama – beloven alle goeds voor de overige 29 Europese shows die nog gepland staan (eerstvolgende 3 shows nu vrijdag in Dublin) waaronder vier in de Benelux:
– donderdag 25 mei – Johan Cruijff Arena Amsterdam
– zaterdag 27 mei – Johan Cruijff Arena Amsterdam
– zondag 11 juni – Megaland Landgraaf
– zondag 18 juni festivalpark Werchter (BE)
In totaal zijn er voor de 31 Europese shows samen meer dan 1,6 miljoen tickets verkocht.
