Thy Art Is Murder
We beginnen met een zomerstorm die Thy Art Is Murder heet (hoewel het in Australië nu winter is). De nieuwe single heet Keres en is voorzien van een zeer mooie video. Het is het tweede smaakmakertje van het komende album Godlike dat op 15 september uitgebracht zal worden via Human Warfare.
Gitarist Andy Marsh zegt over de nieuwe single: “It’s not often we have this level of excitement to present a new single to the world. Keres is a metal anthem filled with grinding verses and stomping choruses, stripping down some of the complexity that may have gotten in the way of previous attempts to deliver a song of this magnitude. The Keres was an evil sprite in ancient Greek mythology that would feed on the dead, but could not participate in acts of violence. We think this behavior is as relevant in the arena of news and politics as it was on those ancient battlefields.”
Soen
Silver Lining Music brengt op 1 september het nieuwe studioalbum van Soen uit. Het titelnummer is voorzien van een video. Memorial is een, voor Soenbegrippen, aardig heavycompositie waarin het gitaarwerk krachtig is neergezet. Maar altijd weet Soen de melodie en melancholie tot in de perfectie te verwerken. Daar is dit geen uitzondering op.
“It is a song to remind us of the victims of the power games that our so-called leaders play”, zegt oprichter en drummer Martin Lopez.
Zanger Joel Ekelöf vult daarop aan: “It’s about PTSD, and the effect war has on people like you and me that are sent to kill and die and have to pay that price for the rest of their lives.”
Dying Fetus
Ook Dying Fetus staat op het punt om een nieuw album uit te brengen. Zij komen een week later met Make Them Beg For Death. En ook op het negende album mogen we snelle, intense muziek verwachten met onophoudelijke grooves.
Make Them Beg For Death delivers savage beatdowns equally designed to pulverize and mesmerize. “It follows on from where Wrong One To Fuck With left off,” belooft drummer Trey Williams ons. “We don’t need to participate in the technical death metal arms race. We’ve got the big guns, and we’ve proven that. It’s all about pointing them in the right direction, so to speak.”
Gitarist/zanger John Gallagher “We put our own twist on Death Metal. We were like most bands, starting in the garage, drinking beer, having a little fun on the weekend, finding the right amps through trial and error. We blended aspects of bands we liked – Suffocation, Obituary, Deicide, and Cannibal Corpse, among others; the dual vocal approach of Carcass – and made them our own. ‘Let’s make it moshy, let’s make it slammy.’”
Voor het drietal is de missie glashelder: “The philosophy is the same now as it was when the band started,” Gallagher confirms. “To write catchy riffs and to make it memorable. Whatever style of music you’re doing, make it something people want to hear repeatedly.”
Temic
Temic kan beschouwd worden als een nieuwe progsensatie waarin leden van Devin Townsend, The Neal Morse Band, Shining en Maraton zich hebben gevonden. Het viertal heeft aangekondigd dat het debuutalbum Terror Managment Theory op 17 november zal worden uitgebracht door Season Of Mist. Je kunt kennis maken met Temic met de eerste single Count Your Losses.
Temic: “Count Your Losses depicts the beginning of our journey. Not only is this track the one that finally opens TEMIC’s door to the public, but it also is the very first track ever written by us, as TEMIC. Tejeida en Gillette ontmoetten elkaar in 2017 toen ze beiden met Mike Portnoy’s Shattered Fortress tourden. Er was meteen een soort van chemie. Ze kregen het niet voor elkaar om de beide agenda’s zo te organiseren dat het tot muziekschrijven kwam tot ergens in 2020 de wereld stilstond en ze beiden zeiden: “Remember how we said we should make music together? Well, how about now?”
The Flower Kings
The Flower Kings zijn geen onbekenden voor velen van ons. De band brengt het 16e studioalbum Look At You Now uit op 8 september via InsideOut Music.
The Flower Kings zeggen over de nieuwe single: “Here’s news from veterans THE FLOWER KINGS – Album Nr. 16! Like a ghost ship sailing in from faraway places – a set of new songs leave their mark on 2023 – A year most of us will remember for the wars, the migration & refugees, the wildfires, the lost youth, the melting ice, the economic crisis, too many dead heroes, the political unrest. Roine Stolt zegt over het nieuwe album: “The first track out – and likewise the opening track – is “Beginner’s Eyes”. A song that has its origin in the very early 90’s – a time before The Flower Kings were gathering – but now finally and finely developed and recorded properly. A happy tune with plenty of flowery sunny themes Roine & Hasse vocals united – and a good groove, cool Hammond and Moog blipping’ and bloppin’ sounds, over a solid beat from Mirko & Michael. There’s no doubt that The Flower Kings plays no ‘style’ – or in no league – other that their own – a style they created and crafted carefully for more than 25 years strong. The album is a celebration of the imagination and craft of those who lead rather than follow. Artwork came in like magic from Joey Tessier – a world of magic and flowery creatures.”
Hand Of Fate
Hand of Fate is opgericht in 2014. Met epic, symfonische rock en metal als belangrijkste invloedbron timmert de band al een tijd aan de weg. Met de nieuwe single Evergrey laten ze weer van zich horen.
Dear Mother
Dear Mother is het product van de samenwerking van gitarist Merel Bechtold en zanger David Pear. Met de nieuwe single Unbreakable hebben ze een uniek geluid weten te vatten waarin invloeden van Slipknot en In Flames verwerkt zijn. Het is de eerste single van de verwachte EP die in het voorjaar van 2024 uitgebracht zal worden. De EP is tot stand gekomen door een zeer succesvolle crowdfunding campagne.
Ruben Israel (drums), Desmond Kuijk (bas) en Ferry Duijsens (gitaar) complementeren de line-up.
Ways
Ways is een band die al eerder langs mocht komen bij Rockportaal. De nieuwe single Erase is sinds 7 juli beschikbaar.
“Erase” is about the regret of not being able to see the struggles of a loved one during a period of growth. It’s the inability to be empathetic, even when the emotions are evident.
Death’s Head And The Space Allusion
De Finse band Death’s-Head and the Space Allusion is voornemens om later dit jaar het tweede album uit te brengen. De eerste single The Son Of Shahar licht een tipje van de sluier op.
Gitarist Antza Talala : “The Son of Shahar is a heavy and mid-tempo song that felt appropriate to release as the first bite. Lyric-wise it’s quite simple. The way of the world today is frankly quite hilarious, and despite all the promises the second coming of Jesus isn’t showing any signs of happening, you might as well call for The Son of Dawn and probe his brain for ideas. Truthfully, there might be an idea from human behavioural models behind the lyrics, but we let everyone reach their own conclusions.”
De band bestaat is in 2016 opgericht in Oulu, Finland en weet melodie, metal en clean vocals netjes te combineren, wat uiteindelijk leidde tot het debuutalbum The Counterbalance in 2019.
Reversed
Reversed komt uit Griekenland en telt vijf leden die van ieder liveconcert een heus feestje maken. De band is te vangen in het hoekje van de hardrock en alternatieve rock.
Spektrvm
Speltrvm komt ook uit Griekenland en is opgericht in 2016 door Michalis Pouliezos en Giorgos Zikas. Uiteindelijk duurde het tot de herfst van 2022 om de complete bezetting van de band rond te krijgen. Er is nu een nieuwe video van Rain Fire dat ook te vinden is op het laatste album Blood For Heaven.
Ben Blutzukker
Ben Blutzukker zorgt altijd voor leuke nieuwe video’s. Dit keer heeft hij Remedy van Leony onder handen genomen en er een leuke metalversie van gemaakt (inclusief legovideo)
