Elyne
Deze Italiaanse metalcoreband heeft een aparte plek in mijn hart veroverd. De nieuwe single Outbreak II: The Reckoning is afgelopen week uitgebracht. In deze single die elementen uit de techno- en industriële metalhoek bevat zet Elyne zich af tegen huiselijk geweld. Het is een hart onder de riem voor iedereen die hiermee te maken heeft.
Shakra
De Zwitsers van Shakra openen 2023 met een ‘bang’. En met de nieuwe single Invincible dragen ze een stevige boodschap uit.
«You are invincible—it happens in your brain». That’s the core message of the single “Invincible”. As simple as this statement may sound, it stands for the essential in everyone’s life, the ability to have an unbreakable will and thereby achieve or create great things. But not only that. It can also mean being able to pull oneself out of the deepest swamp and be perceived in this society as a person steeled with self-confidence. The song is a source of power to strengthen exactly this will. You can achieve anything, not if you believe in it, but if you know it… and that makes you invincible!”

Atrocity heeft een nieuw album: Okkult III en hiermee sluiten ze de trilogy Okkult af.
Jesus Piece
Jesus Piece debuteert met het nieuwe album ….So Unknown bij Century Media Records. Het is vanaf 14 april verkrijgbaar en meteen brengen ze de nieuwe single Gates Of Horn uit. Bereid je voor op een stevige mix van vette metal en hardcore waarbij technische hoogstandjes de nogal manische zang van Aaron Heard ondersteunen. Zelf omschrijven ze het nieuwe album als een clusterbom en drummer Luis Aponte belooft: “This is as close to a Jesus Piece experience as you’re going to get without standing in front of us.”
“The number one thing is the live performance. You can be in the studio and make that record sound insane but if you’re not giving that same energy, that same feeling when you play live, it just doesn’t matter.”
“The making of the record was nothing short of all-consuming. It was an intense and challenging process. The record reflects a lot of confusion, but also, evolution. There was a lot of uncertainty and emotion during the pandemic– we all changed and grew so much. So if there is a single thought or concept to the record, it’s constant metamorphosis. That’s also how we operated as a band on this LP – spending a lot of time songwriting and fleshing things out as a unit, and then upping our game from there. It’s definitely a reflection of us as more mature, playing the best we’ve ever played and feeling like a real band for the first time.”
Ozul
Vanuit Noorwegen komen mooie bands. Eén van die bands die ik tegenkwam is Ozul. Afgelopen vrijdag brachten ze de nieuwe single Lønahorgi uit. Het is een compositie over de behoefte om te ontsnappen naar de natuur en de bergen om met de emotionele pijn die we hebben opgelopen leren om te gaan. Bijzonder plaatje binnen een progressieve setting.
Haken
Binnen het progressieve genre is een band als Haken niet meer weg te denken. De band heeft de derde single Taurus uitgebracht. Een single die te vinden is op het nieuwe album Fauna dat 3 maart verkrijgbaar is.
Ross Jennings : “With such a diverse and eclectic array of material on ‘Fauna’, it was important for us to include a piece of music that represented the metallic edge of our sound which was exploited predominantly on ‘Vector’ & ‘Virus’, with our focus being on hard hitting riffs in odd time signatures.”
“The song’s lyrics were written roughly at the same time we all started hearing about the devastation and crisis happening in Ukraine. I was already writing the piece based on the annual migration of the wildebeests with strong references to people travelling in herds and strength in numbers. Suddenly I realised I had an anchor for what the song could be about and knowing this gives it all the more emotional weight; We’re all on some sort of journey towards salvation or enlightenment. Sometimes out of choice or not, we need to leave the past behind us and make new beginnings. We only have each other, and belief and hope are our strongest allies.”
The Unslain
Nederland kent een aantal goede bands en The Unslain verpakt dat in gouwe ouwe old-schoolmetal. Met de nieuwe single laten ze dit horen waarbij het ‘oude’ geluid eigentijds is neergezet. Een beetje een mix van Metallica en Iron Maiden.
De titel (in) Hell I Am doet het ergste vermoeden, maar naar mijn mening is het toch gewoon een liefdesliedje. De bandleden geven aan:
“The misery you feel within yourself during a heartbreak. All the questions, the uncertainty”. The song’s lyrics, inspired by real-life events, reflect on the aftermath of a breakup, “You can feel like you’re in Hell but sometimes to others you are the Hell. That’s why the title is ‘(In) Hell I Am'”.
Ov Sulfur
Ook een nieuwe telg bij Century Media Records is de blackened deathcoreband Ov Sulfur. Zij brengen op 24 maart het nieuwe album The Burden Ov Faith uit. Er waren al wat tracks beschikbaar, maar nu is ook de nieuwe single Earthen uitgebracht.
“‘Earthen’ is about my nephew who died from cancer at 16,” zegt zanger Ricky Hoover. “After failed bone-marrow transplants, he decided to stop and let it take its course. It’s about witnessing that and being there, holding him when he died. That song is very emotional for me… I was actually crying in the studio tracking vocals. We needed the video to capture the sheer tragedy of that situation to really underscore how unfair and unjust it is for any ‘god’ to put a child through something as awful as cancer.”
Gitarist/zanger Chase Wilson voegt daaraan toe: “The guitar lead from this song is the first thing I wrote that ended up on the album, well over a year ago. The song came together quickly after that and has stayed very similar since. As such, it’ll appeal to fans of the ‘Oblivion’ EP, as well as the newer stuff we’ve been putting out, with the most obvious growth being Ricky’s emotional singing and Leviathvn’s super tasteful drumming. We’re all really proud of this one.”
Queen Golem
Nog meer progressief geweld komt uit België, Roeselare wel te verstaan. Queen Golem is in 2019 opgericht en verwierf al snel naam met hun muziek waarbij technische kwaliteit en goede teksten centraal staan.
Sinds de oprichting heeft de band het album Nomadic uitgebracht. De nieuwe release Guidance By Light is het nieuwe werk en tevens een afscheid van zanger Simon Clement die nieuwe uitdagingen aangaat.
“Guidance by Light” behandelt universele thema’s van onzekerheid, en het zoeken naar begeleiding in moeilijke tijden, met ruwe emotie en evocatieve teksten. Het spreekt over het menselijke gevoel van machteloosheid en onvoldoende zijn, evenals de angst voor het onbekende. Met zijn energieke en grungy sound, is “Guidance by Light” een must-listen voor iedereen die ooit heeft geworsteld en naar leiding heeft gezocht in hun eigen leven.
Rise Of The Northstar
Na The Legacy Of Shi en Here Comes The Boom gaat Rise Of The Northstar onvermoeid verder met hun combinatie van moderne metal, urban muziek en Japanse pop. Met de nieuwe single One Love gaan ze zelfs nog een klein beetje verder. Het is de eerste single van het aankomende album Showdown dat opo 7 april via Atomic Fire beschikbaar komt.

Het nieuwe album Shadowfall van Silver Bullet is uit en om dat te vieren kun je de video bij Soul Reaver bekijken.

Atena zet een melancholische, doch krachtige nieuwe single Subway Anthem neer.
“When 2020 came around and we only had our day job to go to while waiting to play actual shows again, the daily commute to and from work became the place/time we all listened to music and dreamed about getting back at it. In a way the city subway really helped us through the day and ended up helping us crafting one of the songs we couldn’t be more proud of making.”

Embryo
Sinds het eerste album Chaotic Age uit 2006 heeft Embryo zich steeds verder ontwikkeld. De band is nu met A Vivid Shade Of Misery alweer toe aan het vijfde album waarbij drummer George Kollias (Nile) een belangrijke rol speelde. Het album komt uit op 17 maart via Rockshots Records en de eerste single Darkest Lights is nu begeleid door een video.
“With “A Vivid Shade on Misery” we want to have listeners dive into our world by giving them brutal and atmospheric music melted together in the way we love to do plus having Kollias drum on this new album, one of the best drummers in the world, is just an absolute honour. Overall, fans will find this album has the “Embryo” matrix, there’s no doubt about that. It will be a more direct record and its songs make up a pattern that takes the listener on a journey through torments and anxieties, but which at the same time gives him pure energy.”
Wizdoom
Wizdoom is niet in een hok te plaatsen. Het duo zit ergens tussen blues en doommetal in en gebruikt nog veel meer andere elementen. Voor de eerste single Engrave is het duo bijgestaan door Tommy Johansson (Sabaton, Majestica)
“Finally the debut single for Wizdoom is to be released! ’Engrave’ was one of the first songs that got written for this band, and it was the first song that I decided was going to be recorded. I think it’s a good start, as it has many elements and shows the sound and influences for Wizdoom. Lyrics inspired by a Norse symbol of protection, the troll cross!
It has a great slow & heavy groove, with big and deep choirs, intense vocals, but also some more mellow vocals, and last but not least a great bluesy guitar solo by my great friend and guitar wizard Tommy Johansson!” – Chris David
