Ruim twaalf jaar hebben we erop moeten wachten. Maar op vrijdag 24 juni 2022 is het dan eindelijk zover. Op die dag brengt de Engelse prog rock-legende Porcupine Tree – bestaande uit Steven Wilson, Richard Barbieri en Gavin Harrison – zijn gloednieuwe (11e) studio-album ‘Closure/Continuation’ uit via Music For Nations/Sony Music. ‘Closure/Continuation’ is de opvolger van ‘The Incident’ uit 2009.
Zojuist heeft het drietal als wapenfeit van ‘Closure/Continuation’ de eerste single-video ‘Harridan’ online gezet, de perfecte herintroductie van Porcupine Tree’s onderscheidende sound. Een krachtige muzikale trip van acht minuten die de terugkeer inluidt van deze internationale gevierde rockband die muzikaal laveert tussen acts als bijvoorbeeld Genesis, ELP, Yes, Marillion, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Rush, Opeth en Tool.
Op maandag 7 november 2022 geeft de band een exclusief Benelux concert in de Ziggo Dome Amsterdam (NL). In oktober 2010 stond de band voor het laatst op het podium.
Steven Wilson: “Harridan and a few of the other new songs have been in play since shortly after the release of The Incident. They initially lived on a hard drive in a slowly growing computer file marked ‘PT2012’, later renamed ‘PT2015’, ‘PT2018’, and so on. There were times we even forgot they were there, and times when they nagged us to finish them to see where they would take us. Listening to the finished piece, it was clear that this wasn’t like any of our work outside the band – the combined DNA of the people behind the music meant these tracks were forming what was undiniably, unmistakably, obviously a Porcupine Tree record. You’ll hear all of that DNA flowing right through Harridan“.
Porcupine Tree bestaat uit Steven Wilson, Richard Barbieri en Gavin Harrison. De band is opgericht door Wilson in 1987 als een uitlaatklep voor de experimentele opnames die hij maakte naast zijn werk met synthpopduo No-Man. In de vroege jaren ’90 breidde Porcupine Tree zich uit tot een echte band en ging Wilson zijn ideeën verder uitwerken, zowel op plaat als op het podium. In de loop der jaren is Porcupine Tree voortdurend geëvolueerd. Van pastorale psychedelische rock en ambient elektronische soundscapes naar experimentele pop en uiteindelijk tot een geheel eigen voortstuwend metal geluid. Hun laatste albums combineerden moeiteloos elk van die genres en daarmee creëerden Porcupine Tree een uniek muzikaal universum. Ze brachten tien albums uit van 1992’s On The Sunday tot 2009’s The Incident. De band besloot een pauze te nemen na hun grootste liveshow tot dan toe in de Royal Albert Hall in oktober 2010.
