Waanzinnig nieuw werk van o.m. Orbit Culture, OHOH, Vain Louie, Devin Townsend, Purpendicular en King's X

Orbit Culture
De meeste festivals hebben helaas het Zweedse Orbit Culture dit seizoen niet op hun line-up toegevoegd/toe kunnen voegen. Maar de heren staan al geboekt voor Summer Breeze volgend jaar en het lijkt me helemaal niet onwaarschijnlijk dat Orbit Culture volgend jaar menig festivalterrein gaat domineren met hun melodische (death)metal. Dat kan niet anders, want de band staat garant voor een portie uitstekende opzwepende metal. Dat bewezen ze reeds met de laatste albums/EP’s en de nieuwe single Vultures Of North bewijst dat het geen toevalstreffers zijn.
Momenteel staat het Zweedse gezelschap klaar om met In Flames op tour te gaan waarmee ze op 6 december ook Nederland aandoen.
Zanger/gitarist Niklas Karlsson reageert als volgt op de boodschap en de toon achter de nieuwe single:  “We feel that we’ve been waiting for too long now to get out there and play due to the pandemic. During COVID, of course, our fanbase has grown very strong and under the same banner, the antlers emblem, we’ll head out there together stronger than ever before. With this huge US tour coming up, we felt that we’re going to head out there with a new fast and heavy song. With all the European dates this summer that have gone so well, it’s time to put in a higher gear with this new song into the frontline. The riffs and the instrumental side of this track was born out of us wanting a song that just hammers through concrete. A simple 4/4 on the drums and an angry ‘Sawish’ riff on top. “With ‘Strangler,’ from our latest EP Shaman, being the latest video we put out, we wanted to create something that would be totally opposite of both that track and video. We teamed up with Riivata Visuals, who made our music video for ‘Mute The Silent’ back in 2021, to make the video for this one. It’s an angry song. Beware of every one of us under the flag, we are coming for you.”

Our Hollow Our Home
Our Hollow Our Home is geen vreemde bij Rockportaal. De band heeft reeds een aantal albums op de naam staan die allemaal zonder uitzondering aanspreken. De band is tegenwoordig onderdeel van de Arising Empire-familie.

Na het album Burn In The Flood laat OHOH weer van zich horen met de nieuwe single Battle X City (ft Samantha Bower).
“To put it plain and simply, ‘Battle X City’ is a track that is truly unlike any other Our Hollow, Our Home release to date. It is a testament to how far the band are willing to push the key elements of their signature blend of pop-infused metalcore, and how far they can experiment with the contrasting extremes of heavy and light that they have become known for.
Lyrically the song traverses a constant struggle of trying to make something you believe in succeed, whilst the rest of the world tries to convince you that it’s doomed to fail.
It features guest vocals from Samantha Bower, the lead singer of rising pop-metal group Lightwave, which sees Our Hollow, Our Home adding guest clean vocals for the first time ever to a release, which is a refreshing and innovative touch to this riff-heavy, feel good thrill ride of a track.” – Connor (zang)

Vain Louie
Vijf jeugdvrienden die één passie delen: making loud music. Hun energieke melodische hardcore zorgt voor een muur van geluid waar je niet omheen kunt en staat garant voor een krachtige en gepassioneerde liveshow. De afgelopen jaren heeft VAIN LOUIE meerdere singles uitgebracht. In 2022 is het tijd voor iets groters, namelijk hun debuutalbum ‘Time Devours Everything’. Ze hebben een unieke originele sound en sfeer op het album neergezet en zijn gebrand dit live met veel energie af te leveren. Met deze release zijn ze klaar om de internationale podia te betreden.
“Dromen is hopen, leven is treuren. Als je je dromen eindeloos zou kunnen veranderen, zou het dan niet erg verleidelijk zijn om voor altijd te slapen?”
Dromen is een vreemd, magisch maar ongrijpbaar gegeven waarin we onszelf kunnen vinden of juist verliezen. Het kan je inspireren en het kan je verscheuren. Hoopvol en hopeloos, dualiteit. Vrede vinden in een tragedie is beschutting vinden in een storm. Vain Louie balanceert op de dunne lijn tussen tragedie en ultiem geluk.”
Het nieuwe album staat gepland voor 18 november en de single Finding Peace In Tragedy is daar een voorbode van. Retestrakke metalcore waarin melodie en kracht verwikkeld zijn in een eindeloze metaldans en de basis vormen voor een opzwepende muzieksensatie. Vain Louie schaart zich daarmee in het rijtje van de uitstekende bands zoals Changing Tides, Another Now, Reformist en Distant in de metalcorescene die Nederland rijk.

Joe Lynn Turner
Joe Lynn Turner zal voor mij altijd onlosmakelijk zijn verbonden met het eerste concert dat ik in Ahoy mocht meemaken met Rainbow (en Def Leppard in het voorprogramma) in 1981. Sindsdien heeft hij niet stilgezeten en is frontman geweest van menig invloedrijke rockband. Ondertussen is hij ook solo aardig actief en komt zijn nieuwe album Belly Of The Beast uit op 28 oktober via Mascot Label Group. Hij werkte hiervoor samen met producer Peter Tägtgren.
Na miljoenen platen te hebben verkocht, voor talloze fans te hebben gespeeld en als frontman te hebben opgetreden van enkele van de meest invloedrijke rockbands in de geschiedenis, spreekt de bekroonde songwriter en power vocalist Joe Lynn Turner zijn mening zo luid mogelijk uit op zijn elfde album ‘Belly Of The Beast’. Door de krachten te bundelen met de bekende producer Peter Tägtgren [Hypocrisie, PAIN, Lindemann], roept de in New Jersey geboren krachtpatser het soort heavy metal op dat niet alleen je vuist in de lucht pompt, maar je ook aan het denken zet.
“Belly Of The Beast is a phrase we’ve heard over and over again in history,” observeert Turner. “You can trace the cults and corruption all over the world back to prophecies in the Bible. It feels like it’s coming to fruition these days. When you look at the book of Revelation, there it is. I’ve always dipped into esoteric knowledge, Hermeticism, Occultism, Bible research, Eclectic philosophy. I’ve been fascinated with discovery of hidden mysteries. We are in a true spiritual war right now. It’s Good versus Evil. We’ve all got an Angel on one shoulder and a Devil on the other. We’re in the Belly of the Beast, trapped in the System, and there’s no way out of it. The album addresses this.”
Joe kwam producer Peter toevallig tegen op een verjaardag in 2017:  “It happened completely by accident, but some of the best things happen by accident,” merkt Joe op. “I was not very familiar with Peter’s bands Pain and Hypocrisy, but when we met, I loved his personality, and I felt like we had a chemistry together. On the writing side, you have to change and grow to mature. I had this in me. As far as pushing into a heavy vein, Peter said, ‘Joe adapted his voice,’ which is the truth. It’s still me though. I kept it dirty, gritty, and metal.”
Het titelnummer is naar voren geschoven als single: “It’s all about the ritual and the Serpent God of Fear, which is Lucifer,” vertelt Turner. “Who creates the spell upon Mankind. If you believe in good, you must believe in evil. It’s the Yin and Yang of life. They must co-exist, it’s simple physics. This track had an evil flavor, so upon listening, the story line was obvious to me. Peter sprang the double-time chorus on me, and we went for it.”
In dit hoofdstuk van zijn leven nam hij ook een cruciale persoonlijke beslissing. Op driejarige leeftijd werd bij Joe alopecia vastgesteld, Toen hij 14 was, begon hij een pruik te dragen, waarbij hij te maken kreeg met emotionele en psychologische schade door het vele pesten op school. Dus droeg hij het haarstukje gedurende zijn hele carrière, totdat hij uiteindelijk besloot het zonder te doen. “In a way, it’s a blessing and a curse,” geeft hij toe. “I have nothing to prove, and I can wear a wig—or not. I am free to do what I want. I’m a grown man, and I’m getting to be an older man. Many men in this business eventually come to the decision to continue to ‘’wear hair’’ or shave their head which is very fashionable today. Either way, it takes a lot of personal courage. Assholes in high school trying to kick me around made me stronger and gave me the necessary motivation and strength to rise above the rest. Anger and pain are a great tool. If applied correctly, it could develop you to become the best version of yourself. Instead of running away, I was ‘’hiding in plain sight”.
Uiteindelijk heeft Joe een boodschap te brengen met Belly Of The Beast.
“Rock‘n’Roll is about entertainment of course, but I hope you hear the message as well, It seems like everyone has sold their souls to major corporations. Once people are rich and popular, they become a part of the establishment. Where are the rebels? Who’s going to say, ‘Fuck you! We aren’t going to take this shit?’ I am.”

Parkway Drive
Parkway Drive heeft de pandemieperiode gebruikt om eens goed te reflecteren en een pas op de plaats te nemen. Zij kwamen tot de conclusie dat de band de afgelopen 17 jaar (met succes) onophoudelijk heeft gewerkt. Na deze periode is de band de studio ingedoken om het zevende album Darker Still op te nemen dat op 9 september uitgebracht worden door Epitaph Records.
Een van de leidende principes achter Darker Still is de quote van Tom Waits: “I want beautiful melodies telling me terrible things.” Een quote die de koelkast van zanger Winston McCall siert in zijn huis in Byron Bay.
Winston McCall: “When Parkway originally started out, we all were trying to push ourselves to do more than we possibly could, What you hear on Darker Still is the final fulfillment of our ability to learn and grow catching up with the imagination that we have always had.”
To understand that growth is to understand Darker Still, both musically and thematically. Those who thought they had Parkway Drive figured out — the unrivaled energy, the high-octane breakdowns, McCall’s trademark bark — need reconsider everything they know about Australia’s masters of heavy. Darker Still stands as the culmination of a transformative time that has seen Parkway reach new heights of creativity and success by eschewing the restrictive, safe conventions of genre and abandoning their own self-imposed rules in favor of a wide-eyed appreciation of bold new horizons. “There are compositions and songs that we’d never attempted before — or, to be more accurate, which we have attempted in the past, but not had the courage, time or understanding to pull off,”
Gitarist Jeff Ling : “I’m really proud of what we have achieved together, and feel that as musicians, we have really ascended to new realms of class and ability.”
Een video bij het titelnummer is nu online. Misschien minder heftig dan je gewend mag zijn van Parkway Drive, maar daarom niet minder indrukwekkend.

Devin Townsend
Devin Townsend is één van de artiesten die 24/7 muziek lijkt te maken. Tijdens de diverse lockdowns was het Devin die geregeld met nieuw werk kwam op YouTube en deze geniale muzikale gek of gekke muzikaal genie zette ook het afgelopen seizoen weer uitstekende shows neer, die allemaal perfect in elkaar zitten en doorspekt zijn met de humor van Devin zelf. Eind oktober zal Devin Townsend zijn nieuwe album Lightwork uitbrengen en de eerste single, waarvan de video in Spanje werd opgenomen, is nu online. Volgens jaar kun je hem live aanschouwen tijdens zijn tour door Europa.

Purpendicular
Opgericht in oktober 2007 door zanger Robby Thomas Walsh komt Purpendicular met een nieuw album Human Mechanic op 23 september. De band featuring Ian Paice heeft nu ook de video bij de eerste single uitgebracht. De band speelt muziek met een vette groove en funky baslijnen en het zou zomaar kunnen dat je het geluid van Deep Purple enigszins herkent. Maar Purpendicular is meer dan zomaar een kopie van Deep Purple. Eén ding staat vast: naast het drumwerk van Ian Paice hebben de gitaar en het Hammondorgel een belangrijke vinger in de pap.

Railgun
Railgun speelt melodische deathmetal en heeft nu een video bij de single Night Terros online gezet.
“‘Night Terrors’ is a foray into something slightly more theatrical both musically and visually for Railgun. The song is dark, heavy, melodic, and is complemented by an incredible music video directed by Curtis Jensen of Apple Wagon Films. This is without a doubt our best, and most cohesive work to date.”
Railgun bestaat al sinds 2009 en is/was beïnvloed door de metalcorepioniers uit het begin van deze eeuw.
